FATHER TOM COUGHLIN, the first ordained Deaf Catholic priest in the US, obtained an RN (registed nurse) license from the State of New York after passing a rigorous NY State Board of Nursing examination in July 1996. He also received an associate of science in nursing degree from Regents College, Albany, New York, in April 1996. He holds an LPN (licensed practical nurse) diploma from Kapiolani Community College, Honolulu, Hawaii. Currently working part-time as an RN in New York City, he also works as coordinator for a new training program for Deaf candidates to the Roman Catholic priesthood at St Joseph's Seminary, Yonkers, New York.

JOSH HOWARD, a 5-year-old Aurora boy who is deaf, raised more than $600 to buy blankets for victims of last week's Hacienda Hotel fire in Thornton. He collected cash contributions door to door and at a local retail store, and bought 60 blankets. The blankets, donated to the American Red Cross, were delivered to the fire victims by Aurora fire fighters.
